art director riccardo maria chiacchio worked with photographer sam gregg on a shoot called tutti gli angeli hanno i capelli ricci (all angels have curly hair). i thought about it today while i was washing the dishes.
i sat down for tea and googled that expression. i know three or four typical, probably a bit niche, probably a bit useless italian expressions that i always use when someone tries to hold a conversation in italian with me, to cover up the fact that i actually forgot almost all the italian i knew.

(moustached woman has always been appreciated).
i had the curly hair expression stuck in my head. i remembered seeing a picture of graffiti on riccardo’s instagram with that phrase, but it somehow led me to r/catholicism, to a question posted five years ago:

perché gli angeli nell’arte hanno sempre un aspetto così androgino?
(why do angels in art always have such an androgynous appearance?)
mi sembra davvero strano. hanno sempre i capelli lunghi e ricci e la faccia rasata, ma sono chiaramente maschi. perché? la gente pensava che questo li avrebbe fatti apparire più spirituali?
(it seems really strange to me. they always have long, curly hair and clean-shaven faces, but they are clearly male. why? did people think this would make them appear more spiritual?)
i started looking at paintings of angels. the assumption of the virgin by francesco botticini. heaven and earth united, with lots of angels sitting together. all of them have beautiful curly hair.
and short hair too. which is very, very hard. it’s very hard to maintain short curls. i speak from experience, because i just cut my hair and it’s really hard to take care of it.
angels sit in the sky. altitude impacts your hair massively. drier air makes your hair less frizzy, and water is a major component. hard water (london water) is terrible for curls. the don’t have hard water in the sky.
i’m very jealous of them. and if you have curls, i bet you are too.
so here are my favourite products for low altitudes, bad water, earthy hair.

2. boots curl creme
3. davines curl building serum
